Peri/menopause in the Workplace

Peri/menopause affects women and trans men from as young as 35, a time when they are often reaching senior positions and are well established in their careers.

The Facts

Perimenopause

This is the period of time leading up to the menopause and can occur from the age of 35 and last anywhere from 7-10 years. Not many people realise that this is the period of time that causes most distress. Debilitating symptoms include but are certainly not limited to : anxiety, loss of confidence, insomnia, brain fog, low mood and depression.

Menopause

Menopause comes after the perimenopause and typically occurs around the age of 51. It is confirmed by the total absence of periods for 12 consecutive months. Symptoms start to settle down at this point causing less disruption to the persons life,

Survey Findings

4 out of 10 ( 38.4%) women and trans men have thought about quitting their jobs due to the devastating symptoms of the peri/menopause.  11% said they were forced to or were planning to abandon their careers due to being overwhelmed by the symptoms. Colleague attrition and absenteeism has been further compounded by the lack of awareness, training, education and support with Menopause in the Workplace.
